HSN code explained: meaning, structure and how to find one

An HSN code places goods in a classification system. Its digits move from a broad product group toward a more specific entry. This guide shows the levels, explains how to search, and points to official sources for verification.

The basics

What does HSN mean?

HSN means Harmonised System of Nomenclature. It is the name commonly used in India for the goods classification built on the international Harmonized System (HS). The HS groups goods under headings and subheadings; countries can add more digits for their own tariff detail. The World Customs Organization describes the international HS code at the six-digit level. Read the WCO explanation ↗

In this directory, HSN is used for goods and SAC for services. A code description is a useful way to find a candidate entry, but a short product name may not contain enough detail to settle a classification.

How an HSN code is structured

The first six digits follow the international HS structure: two digits for the chapter, two more for the heading, and two more for the subheading. National tariff schedules may continue beyond those six digits. The supplied directory example below has an eight-digit tariff item.

The example illustrates how the levels connect in this directory. Check the full description and current official tariff before relying on a classification.

Quick answers

Common questions about HSN codes

Is every HSN code eight digits long?

No. The international HS classification uses six digits. National tariff schedules can add digits, and entries can appear at different levels. Use the code length and level shown in the relevant official source.

Can I find a code by product name?

Yes. Search by description in the Goods tab and try a specific technical description. Search results are candidates; compare the full item details and verify the classification officially.

Are HSN and SAC codes the same?

No. HSN is used for goods, while SAC is used for services in India. The directory separates them into Goods and Services searches.

Does an HSN code tell me the GST rate?

Not in this directory. A rate lookup and a classification lookup are different tasks. Confirm rates and applicable conditions against current official GST materials.

Where can I verify a code?

Use the GST Portal’s Search HSN/SAC facility and its downloadable directory. The portal explains how to search by code or description and download HSN details.
